We know that every decision we make as mom affects our children, so it’s no surprise that when we decide to address our health, those decisions affect them as well.

In today’s episode of the podcast, I am chatting with my client Beth, who shares how the changes she made to her habits have had a direct impact on her daughters. Beth also shares the new life motto that she uses to keep herself on track to living a long and healthy life.

Tired, Drained, and Exhausted

Beth and I have known each other for quite a while. We met through CrossFit and immediately hit it off.

Beth felt good for a while about her health; she’s was a fairly healthy eater and worked out on a regular basis. But what she struggled with was energy. She felt exhausted and drained almost all the time.

Some big life changes propelled her to take the action she knew she needed to take in order to get a better handle on her overall health and energy.

She came to me originally to help her really hone in on her food. She wanted to do a better job of eating foods that would give her energy and would help her to meet her health goals.

Are You Eating Enough?

When Beth came to me for help and coaching, I didn’t have to dive very deep into her food journal to see that she was a classic example of not eating enough.

I see this all the time. Women seem to naturally feel like they eat too much. Not that Beth thought she was overeating per se, but she definitely wasn’t eating enough to fuel her body and her workout routines.

Through some minor tweaking, Beth and I were able to get her to the point of realizing that what she was missing wasn’t some huge mindset issue. She simply needed to eat more food.

One of the things Beth did to help herself remember to eat more of the right foods was to adopt the motto:

I am fueling myself for life.relaxation space

Setting Boundaries in Relationships

Once we got the food part under control, Beth and I worked on helping her to set healthy boundaries in some of her personal relationships.

Motherhood is one exhausting job, and if you don’t go into it with high energy and grounded emotions, you won’t be able to engage with your children in a healthy way.

Beth truly wanted to help her youngest child improve her eating habits, but because she didn’t have the energy she needed from eating enough, it was far too easy to give in when her daughter complained about dinner.

Setting an Example for Your Children

Early on in our coaching, I helped Beth learn to eat from a balanced plate. It’s always something I do with my clients.

But what she found was that while she was eating balanced plates, she wasn’t expecting her daughter to do the same. So we came up with a plan for Beth to establish consistency around requiring a vegetable on the plate at dinner every day.

It wasn’t difficult to insist or to be consistent on that one meal every day. And Beth felt good about it.

Beth began taking her daughter to the grocery store and teaching her how to shop for food, allowing her to choose certain foods to try. She also helped her learn to meal plan by allowing her to choose meals to make and which veggies to have for a meal.

This is not something that Beth was able to accomplish overnight.

It’s a process and it took a ton of consistency and a willingness on Beth’s part to make it happen. But now that she sees such tremendous progress, it is all worth it.

Growing in Self-Confidence

I do what I do because I want to see women increase their self-confidence.

Yes, I want women to be healthier and to eat to fuel themselves, but my ultimate goal is to empower women and to help them see how amazing they are.

Beth has grown so much in her overall confidence levels. I see her setting PR’s at the gym and being willing to take on challenges she wouldn’t have had the energy to take on before we started working together.

One of the areas where I really pushed hard with Beth was in stepping out of her comfort zone when it came to reaching out to friends and in her other relationships.

I encouraged her to reconnect with people she hadn’t connected with in a long time.

We also worked on scheduling time for Beth to focus on self-care.

Her kids are her number one priority, and nothing wrong with that, but the healthier we are as moms, the better we show up for our children.

Facing Your Fears

We all have fears and certain areas where we hold back. I believe it’s important to face those fears head-on and step into them.

Beth took me seriously on that and went skydiving last year. I’m not sure I’m ready to step up to her level of facing my fears.

One of the biggest Aha! moments that Beth experienced through our working relationship was that the more she gives to herself, the more she has to give to others. She realized that whenever she had free time, instead of doing something she loved or enjoyed, her automatic response was to go to the gym.

She was becoming addicted to going to the gym as a result of being too afraid to reach out to friends or to explore other things she enjoyed doing.

One of Beth’s greatest fears was simply being alone with herself.

She began to force herself to “sit with herself” and figure out what the things were that she did enjoy. She hadn’t thought about them in so long that it took some time to recapture them.

Is It Time for You to Stop Making Excuses?

Beth is all too familiar with the thought pattern that says, “As soon as things slow down, I’ll do something for myself.”

It’s all too easy for us as women and moms to put off the things that are important to us. But we have to come to a point where we decide to do what we know we need to do, whether it’s the “right time” or not.

Beth recognizes that it was mostly fear that held her back from starting. She made many excuses for it but it was fear underneath them all.

Don’t let fear hold you back. There’s never a better time than right now. If you’ve ever had a thought of getting coaching or help with your health, do it today. Don’t wait.

The longer you wait, the longer it will take to get control of your life. If you’re ready to be more confident and to feel in control of your life, let’s get you on the right path.

There may be many layers of this onion that you have to peel back before you get to all the root causes. If you don’t know where to start, I am here to help.
