Do you feel a deep longing within yourself to do something? Is your inner voice prompting you to get a message out into the world? In this episode, I’m going to share how to get your message into the world.
Today marks a shift in the podcast and it’s one I’ve been wanting to take for a while.
I feel compelled to speak to the women whose inner voice is telling them that they have a larger purpose in life than their corporate job or being a stay-at-home mom.
If you have a message that you feel compelled to get out there, this episode is for you. I’m going to share with you some things you can do to overcome the fear of speaking your truth and some practical ways to get your message out into the world.
Because the world needs what you have to offer.
So, today’s episode is about business and how to overcome the fear of putting your message into the world.
A Desire for More
Over the years that I’ve coached women, I’ve watched this evolution time and time again: when they start to gain more confidence in themselves, they start to be willing to take more risks and they’re willing to do more things that make them uncomfortable.
Many of them become aware that the life they’ve been living no longer serves them well.
In the fall of 2019, I hosted an in-person retreat and I had more than one woman say to me, “Amanda, I need more coaching on what my next steps are.”
These women had discovered that they were passionate about certain things and they actually wanted to pursue these things as more than a hobby or something that they would think about later in life.
And so began the Inner Circle.
You Are Meant for More
The Inner Circle is a new coaching program that I am hosting, and it involves 10 women plus myself. The whole concept of the Inner Circle is me helping these women to grow their passions into a profitable business.
The current group contains a woman who is a mindset mentor for young athletes, a physician who is growing a tele-med practice, an emotional intelligence coach, a woman building a marketing business, a woman growing a life coaching practice, and more.
I started the Inner Circle because I remember what it felt like to be that woman. To know I had passions and dreams but I didn’t know where to start to build something from them.
Every woman in the group has been right there, too.
If you find yourself there now, knowing that your inner voice is telling you that you were meant for something bigger, something more, listen up. Because it’s time for you to step into your truth and listen to that inner voice.
It’s time for us to have the conversation.
Stop Playing It Safe
Back when I had been working with clients for a little while, and I was calling what I did a hobby, I was listening to Amy Porterfield’s podcast one day while driving down the highway, and I was having conversations about what it means to pursue our passions.
I was reading the amazing book, The War of Art, and I was learning about resistance and what it means and how it shows up in our lives. Add aff link to book.
And everything was starting to add up to the question, “Amanda, what are you going to do?”
Was I going to continue to play it safe and call my work with clients a hobby? Or was I going to go all-in?
Fear of Failure
I didn’t have to dig very deep to know that the reason I was hesitant to go all-in was that I was afraid of failure.
I was worried about a lot of different things:
- Was I qualified?.
- What would others think of me?
- Was my current success real?
- Could I maintain the results I was seeing?
- Could I manage growth…if it grew?
- Could I be an amazing mom and grow a business?
And The Answer Is…Yes
What I know now is that the answer to every one of those questions was a resounding YES. Not just a yes, actually, but a hell, yes.
- Yes, I am qualified.
- Yes, I have continued to deliver results.
- Yes, I can be an amazing mom and business owner.
- Yes, I can figure out how to manage growth.
- And finally, who the hell cares what other people think?
If I cared about what other people think, trust me, I would not be here now.
But here I am, 4 years later, coaching people face-to-face, not hiding behind an email inbox, but face-to-face, and helping them do much deeper work than merely watching the numbers on a scale.
Entrepreneurship has been the greatest journey of personal development I’ve ever faced in my life. And it was given to me at the exact moment I needed it.
*Everything I’ve shared so far is simply my story and my journey to entrepreneurship. I want you to understand that I know what it feels like to be at the beginning of this journey. I know the fear and uncertainty. But I want to help you move past it into the life you were meant to live.
So, How Do You Build a Business?
If you Google “how to build a business,” you’re going to get a lot of information on how to create an LLC, where to purchase insurance, how to set up Quickbooks, etc.
And don’t get me wrong, all of that information is great, and you absolutely will need it. Eventually. But for now, there are things you need to know that you won’t find in your Google search.
Things like turning your deep inner voice and what it’s telling you into a profitable, passion-driven business.
But the most important piece, the piece that will ultimately make or break your business, is your mindset.
Developing a Strong Mindset
Entrepreneurship is not for the faint of heart. It takes a strong constitution to start a business and to stick with it through all the ups and downs. And trust me ladies, there will be downs.
For every client who says yes, 15 will say no. For every success, there will be something that threatens to overwhelm you and will make you want to quit.
But if you feel like you have to do this thing; if your inner voice is pushing you to get your message into the world; you have to develop the mindset that will help you to push through and keep on going, even when you’re scared or when you don’t know what you’re doing.
In the beginning, I stayed up all night plenty of nights trying to figure out how to build a freaking website. Now? I hire people to do that stuff for me.
How to Overcome Limiting Beliefs
The first step in developing your mindset is overcoming your own limiting beliefs.
When we get so stuck in our thoughts, we can’t make forward motion. And the more we hang out in negative thought patterns, the more we spiral downward. And downward spirals will always prevent us from taking action.
We have to overcome the stories we tell ourselves.
And unfortunately, this won’t be a “one and done” kind of thing. These will be recurring thoughts and you will have to continue to work against them.
I want to share with you the 3 limiting beliefs I hear constantly from the women I work with and that I struggled with when I was building my own business.
Belief #1- People Are Going to Judge Me
“Oh dear god, if I actually put my opinion and thoughts out into the world, people are going to judge me!”
This one is pretty simple: yep, they are going to judge you.
There now, feel better?
The fact is, people’s judgment is a reflection of their own insecurities. They probably don’t know this, but ultimately, judgment of others comes from a place of deep insecurity.
The way to overcome this belief is to put your message out there with the understanding that some people will judge you. You have to develop the mindset that you are no longer living your life for others; you are now living life for you.
Remember, the people who need your message will embrace you. Don’t worry about the rest.
You can care about what people say; just don’t let their judgment dictate your action or lack thereof.
Belief #2- People Don’t Think I’m Qualified
“But Amanda, I’m not an expert! Won’t people think I’m a fraud?”
This belief paralyzed me when I was trying to get started. Sometimes, I still struggle with the fact that I don’t have a Ph.D. in nutrition or psychology.
In the beginning, I told myself that there was no way I could be successful without a degree in one or both of those areas. We live in a world where academics are held up as the only way to build a successful life.
And it’s simply not true.
There is no education in the world that can equal someone who has gone through the same thing you have and who can not only empathize with you but can help you learn how to walk through it based on their own experience doing so.
Passion exceeds education, and real-life experience is how we gain the confidence to serve and teach others. If you’re one step ahead of someone, you’re ready to begin teaching someone else how to take that step.
Belief #3- How Will People Find Me?
“This is all well and good, but let’s say I do step out and try to start something…how will anybody know about me or find me?”
First of all, how did you find me? How did you find this podcast? How did you find your favorite place to order vitamins or your favorite show to watch on Netflix?
I’d be willing to bet that you, like me, get most of your suggestions from social media. Social media is a huge animal and provides some amazing opportunities for getting your message out there.
Before you even worry about being everywhere on social media though, I want to challenge you to get a client.
Get that first client, and absolutely blow their freaking mind with how you overserve them.
As far along as I am in my business, and as much growth as I have seen, the place that I still get the most clients is from referrals.
So, how will they find you?
Find one client, over-deliver, and that will bring your next client. Rinse and repeat forever.
Your Action Step
There’s no way I’m going to close this episode out without giving you an action step.
If this episode spoke to something deep inside of you; if you’re unhappy in your current job; if you feel unfulfilled; if you know there’s something out there for you but you don’t know exactly what it is; here’s your action step:
Open your journal and make a T-chart.
On the left side, list your current roles as a wife, mother, career woman, etc. Write down the things that suck the life right out of you. Get it all down on paper.
On the right side, write down all those things that get your blood flowing! All the things that get you excited! Write down all the things you wish you had more time to do or that you feel like you could do all day and not get tired of them.
Set a timer for 2-3 minutes per side and just write.
Now, step back and assess your lists for themes.
What jumps out at you? What things do you see coming up? Which topics are ones that you want to talk about with someone every chance you get?
Think about those things that excite you and ask yourself, what would it look like to take those to the next level?
If this conversation has scratched an itch for you, I hope you’ll join me for my upcoming workshop, The Top 3 Things Not to Do When Starting an Online Business.
