No-Guilt Investment

Clarita and I spoke at length about working together a full year before we actually did. She was honest with me about her feelings of guilt over investing financially in herself. She made a statement to me at the time; she said, “I’m going to save up for a year and then I’ll be back.”

And I’ll be honest, I hear that a lot. “I’ll be back.” And sometimes they do come back and sometimes they don’t.

But Clarita, true to her word, saved up, and one year later, she was back and ready to get to work, no longer having to worry or feel guilty about the financial investment. I was super impressed with how she had stuck to what she said and that she had the discipline to do it. yoga on the beach

“I Knew I Needed to Make a Change”

When Clarita reached out to me, she did so because she had come through a cancer scare and she knew she needed to make a change in her nutrition.

In 2018, when Clarita was walking through her “cancer scare”, as she calls it, she thought it was the worst thing that could ever happen to her. And now, in 2020, she says it was a gift. So, let me ask you, how does one go from being scared to death and thinking they’ve just received a death sentence, to calling it a gift not even two years later?

When Clarita was diagnosed, she says she went immediately into victim mode. She could only think about dying, and how she was going to leave her daughters behind. She stayed inside a deep, dark cave for a year, not even able to see the light at the mouth of that cave.

After that year, she was finally able to start looking at some things she wanted to change, and nutrition was the first thing she wanted to tackle.

When we started working together, we began with the nutrition piece, as that was super important to Clarita. But from there, we moved into working on her mindset, and how her brain worked, and then deeper. It was a holistic program, designed to treat not only her nutrition needs but her entire self.

Building a Healthy Relationship with Food

Before Clarita contacted me, she had a fairly common, unhealthy relationship with food. She ate the way her parents ate; lots of Mexican food, eating out, and no label reading.

That started to catch up with her though, and when she got the cancer diagnosis, she knew absolutely that she had to get a handle on her nutrition once and for all. She had already begun to read labels and do some self-educating before she saved up to work with me.

Today, Clarita sees food in a completely different light.

She enjoys food, and she sees it as fuel for her body. Whereas before, she had a lot of fear around food and what it was doing to her, she now values food and what it can do for her

Clarita actually went back to school and got her certification in nutrition!

Your Journey Doesn’t Have to Be Complicated

Clarita says that one of the things that surprised her most when we started working together was how simple I made everything.

Food and nutrition don’t have to be complicated.

We often make it much harder than it has to be by thinking we have to do everything at once. We don’t. Clarita and I began where I begin with all of my clients and that is by learning to create a balanced plate.

Too many women believe that you can’t enjoy food and be healthy. Listen, those two things are not mutually exclusive! You can definitely care for your body and enjoy your food. If you aren’t enjoying food, you need to take a step back and figure out what’s going on.

You Don’t Have to Start with Everything

Not only does your journey not have to be complicated, but you shouldn’t try to start with everything at once.

When we complicate things, we don’t make progress. We get overwhelmed and we don’t know where to start so we fall back into old habits. But when we take things one step at a time, we build a strong foundation and we see results.

At Clarita’s medical check-ups, her doctors are amazed at her progress and results and are encouraging her to continue with what she’s doing. She started simple, with a balanced plate, and she has gone on to add small steps on top of every previous step.

She would never have believed she could be a successful meal planner but here we are, and she relies on meal planning to help make those balanced plates a reality for her very busy daily life.

I see most of my clients come in ready to go like gangbusters and the first thing we do is slow down and begin to create one habit at a time.

Providing an Example for Your Children

Clarita started her journey to get a handle on her health and wellness after cancer. But what happened along the way is that she became an example for her own daughters, who noticed and commented on the difference in their mom.

What started as a means of caring for herself turned into a means of teaching her children to are for themselves as well.

Clarita calls this the biggest gift that she received from coaching with me; gaining the tools to deal with life’s uncertainties and knowing how to move forward, even in difficult circumstances.

Setting Healthy Boundaries

We talk about boundaries a lot on this podcast, mostly because the women I work with tend to struggle with setting healthy boundaries with others. This was definitely true for Clarita.

She grew up walking on eggshells and always feeling like she didn’t measure up. She acknowledges that her parents did the best they could with what they had to work with, but it was a difficult childhood.

Being an adult who still felt as though she didn’t measure up, and completely lacking any sort of self-confidence has been one of the toughest battles that Clarita has fought through.

What you experience as a child follows you to adulthood and if you don’t deal with it, you stay stuck in those modes of living. When it’s all you know, it’s all you know.

What Clarita has learned is that she has the power to change the way she does things, the way she thinks about things. She doesn’t have to live in those old ways, letting fear dictate her actions and beliefs.

If you live in the fear of others or of changing the ways you grew up and doing things differently, you have options. You don’t have to stay stuck.

There may be many layers of this onion that you have to peel back before you get to all the root causes. If you don’t know where to start, I am here to help.
