Do you struggle with consistency on your journey toward better health? Do you ever feel like you take 2 steps forward only to take 3 steps back?  What you need is forward momentum and today, I’m going to share with you how the momentum of a little win can help you and ultimately see big changes in your life.

One of the reasons we don’t gain more momentum is because we so often feel overwhelmed.

If you’re ready to beat overwhelm and start feeling more in control of your life, head over to Feel Amazing Naked and sign up for the workshops I’m teaching on this topic.

Overwhelm is not something you have to experience every week. You can find massive freedom in overcoming it.

What Is Momentum, Anyway?

Momentum is one of those things that you know when you feel it but it can be hard to actually see. I like to define it as strength or force gained by motion.

In order to help us better understand what momentum looks like, I want to share a story with you.

My daughter plays soccer. And as an athlete and a strong woman, I sometimes have trouble sitting back and keeping quiet as she learns the game and how to be her best. Hear me, I am not one of “those” soccer moms.

We welcome mistakes in our family. But we also commit to doing our absolute best at whatever we choose to do. And it was obvious that our daughter was not giving it her all.

So, I decided to address it with her before a coach had to step in and do it.

Now, we didn’t tell her she wasn’t doing a good job. We asked her if she was doing her best and what it would look like to challenge herself to go a little bit harder, to do a little bit more than she was currently doing.

Seeing the Results of Pushing Ourselves

The next game she played, we could see it in her eyes. She was going all in. And pretty soon, she was able to make a really great play.

And you could see how that play affected her. She had a, “Look at me!” look on her face.

That feeling she had led to her making even more effort, which led to her scoring a goal. Her team was now cheering for her, which created even more momentum for her. And the better she did, the more playing time she got.

The more playing time she got, the more opportunities she got. And ultimately, she was able to score another goal.

That boost of momentum leads to wins in your life. And those wins lead to more momentum and more wins, and that momentum and those wins continue to build on each other.

If you’re struggling with consistency, all you need is one small win to get that momentum train started down the track, where it will lead to more wins, and those wins will increase momentum, and the cycle goes on and on and on.

Small Steps to Big Wins

One of the biggest hurdles I see to building momentum is believing in the myth of perfect timing.

We’ve been conditioned our whole lives to believe that there is such a thing as the perfect time to begin something. Just think about the pressure people put on themselves every January. But I firmly believe that there is no such thing as the perfect time.

Another issue is that when we do start something new, we look for momentum in the really big wins.

For example, if you have a weight loss goal, you may focus on the larger goals rather than those tiny wins that build momentum. And by larger goals, I don’t mean the entire 25 lbs you need to lose. I’m talking about losing a pound a week.

Think back to the thing I asked my daughter to do. I simply asked her, for one play of the game, to push herself harder than she normally did. And what happened?

She experienced a win. Just one play of being the first one to the ball inspired her to play harder, which led to her scoring that goal, which led her to want to be first to the ball again, which led to another goal.

Dealing with Analysis Paralysis

The most overwhelming part of any new thing is getting started. We often don’t know what steps to take to begin and so we become paralyzed.

When we only look ahead toward a great big goal, we can’t get a clear vision of what the small wins would look like.

Think about business for a moment; if you have 3 women starting businesses, will they all three likely hit the same goals at the same time? No!

And yet, when we expect ourselves to hit generic goals popular in the health and wellness space, we set ourselves up for failure by trying to reach outcomes through canned pathways that don’t actually exist.

We are all unique, and the little wins that give me a momentum boost might do absolutely nothing for you.

Repetition Breeds Mastery

We are always looking for the next biggest and best thing. Shiny object syndrome is an epidemic in our world.

But the fact is that repetition breeds mastery. Building small habits and getting those small wins provides the momentum to move on to the next steps.

If you joined me for my Reboot back in January of this year, you know that we focused in on the 12 small habits we are going to build throughout this year that will get us closer to our goals. We are focusing on one thing per month, and those habits will give us small wins.

And each small win will bleed into the next month and provide the momentum to keep going.

Momentum Grows

The really cool thing about momentum is that as long as you don’t stop, it won’t stop. If you keep going, each small win will lead you to the next one.

I have clients that come to me for help with food and weight loss who end up sticking around for help with their finances, following a lifelong passion, or any number of other things. Because once they realize they actually can control their own destiny through small daily decisions, they begin to build up the momentum to keep going in other areas of their lives.

This is exactly why I am developing my Inner Circle coaching program. Because women keep asking me to coach them to the next level. They want to pursue their passions that they never thought they could.

Action Step

Here’s your takeaway from this episode:

Begin each day knowing what your small win for the day is going to be.

How are you going to take that small win and begin to allow it to compound? You take your tiny win and it gives you momentum for the next day and it begins to compound just like interest.

And before you know it, you’ve experienced exponential growth and change. Not because you focused on the big stuff but because you focused on the small stuff.

When you take small steps and you focus on small wins, you’re going to be willing to take bigger risks, invest more in yourself, and new opportunities will begin to show up in your life.

There may be many layers of this onion that you have to peel back before you get to all the root causes. If you don’t know where to start, I am here to help.
